About Other Courses
from Studies in Grace
In Addition to A Year in the Bible, Studies in Grace offers a
number of other courses. The instructor can tailor these to your group,
Bible study, or adult class format. These courses offer thought-provoking
material and any course can stand alone or serve as an introduction to
other pieces of the Studies in Grace curriculum.
Any of these courses can be redesigned to fit the specific needs of a
given congregation or group.
Diving into the Parables
Plunge into the teachings of Jesus, the Messiah, and get a good grip on
the method and content of parables, his favorite teaching style. Learn
what a parable is and why he taught in parables. Get a better grasp on
the powerful messages of the parables of Jesus. You will learn how to
read the parables with more confidence and have greater insight into the
message contained in them. Experience that powerful blast of God's Word
as it comes to you through these simple stories. Begin to recognize phony
methods for interpreting Jesus' parables. Be confidently equipped through
the study to take the appropriate action steps in your life. Know and
trust God more deeply than before because of your encounter with God's
Word.
This study is being offered as a one day seminar but could be expanded
or contracted to suit a specific situation.
Genesis
Often relegated to children's Sunday School classrooms as a repository
for stories which can be cleaned up enough to interest children while
their parents worship, the central meaning of Genesis is often lost. As
the preamble and most of the historical prologue of God's covenant with
Israel, Genesis, the book of beginnings, is among the most important books
in the Bible. This study picks up the high themes of Genesis, looks at
the creation, fall, redemption and response motif of the book and helps
participants discover again the passion, excitement and heroism of God's
mighty and gracious acts in this first Bible book.
This study has been offered at 90 minutes per session for 5 sessions but
could be expanded or contracted to suit a specific situation.
Ruth
This study explores God's activity and sovereignty "behind the scenes"
in history. This course offers a detailed and in-depth look at this fascinating
Old Testament book, along with a discussion of how God still works through
history and circumstance. This short powerful book illustrates and amplifies
the history of redemption and the covenantal law.
This study runs 4-6 week
Revelation
There is a lot of hype about what the last days might look like. In all
the excitement, we should not forget to look at what the Bible says about
"the end of the age." This course cuts through the movie and
pop-culture approaches to the Book of Revelation to present a Biblically
faithful teaching that differs radically from the popular views of our
day. (This course is taught from an open-ended preterist and amillennial
viewpoint.)
This study runs anywhere from 1 hour per session for 6 sessions to 2 hours
session for 13 sessions.
Playing By The Rules for...
(Prophecy, Parables, The Gospels, The Law, Wisdom Literature, The Epistles,
etc.)
Did you know that there are right and wrong ways to read the types of writing
in the Bible; that prophecy, narrative and proverb each need to be read
differently? This course teaches the basics of reading and understanding
the various types of Scripture in order to get the most from reading the
Bible. It's dangerous to apply our own rules and to interpret the Bible
in ways that make us most comfortable. This course teaches the basic rules
for how to read each type of Scripture in order to minimize misunderstanding
and maximize our ability to hear God's word to us.
This study runs anywhere from 1 hour per session for 5 sessions to 90 minutes
per session for 18 sessions.
Any of the genre of Scripture could be taught as a separate course for
four to six weeks.
A Walk Through the. . .
(Prophets, Gospels, Histories, etc.)
Any group of Bible books may be studied as a survey course, beginning with
principles for how to read that type of Scripture, followed by a brief
introduction to each book in the series.
This study could run from four to sixteen weeks, depending on the content
chosen.
True, Mere Real, Basic, Spirituality
This course is topical and discusses the themes of Scripture in relation
to the ideas behind words like "secular," "worldly,"
"ministry, " "spiritual," "sacred," etc.,
with a view to untangle these concepts in light of the Biblical idea of
vocation in the Old and New Testaments.
This study has been offered as a four week, 90 minute course, but could
be expanded or contracted to suit a specific situation.
Philemon
This remarkable short letter from Paul to a wealthy landowner in Colossae
is often glossed over when reading the New Testament letter. This one
week class offers important insights into what God is still saying to
the churches through this frequently overlooked Word from God
The Ministry of Jesus Christ
This course looks at the work and ministry of Jesus Christ by focusing
on the different designations and titles which are used in Scripture to
describe his work. Just as each of the four gospels present a slightly
different view of the Messiah, this course looks at Jesus through the
eyes of the Old Testament prophets, as well as through the Gospels, epistles
and the Revelation.
This study runs 1 hour per session for 5 or 6 sessions.
First Person Narrative Dramas
In addition, Trace James is known for his powerful use of first person
narrative in sermon and other shorter presentational settings. Meet Zacchaeus,
Herod, Caiaphas, and other New Testament characters in an entertaining
and informative theater experience which goes way beyond theater to the
Word of God.
